Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai on Tuesday after experiencing symptoms of acidity. The RBI released a statement confirming that his condition is stable, and he will be discharged within 2-3 hours.
In a statement, the RBI said, “Reserve Bank of India Governor Shri Shaktikanta Das experienced acidity and was admitted to Apollo Hospital, Chennai, for observation. He is now doing fine and will be discharged in the next 2-3 hours. There is no cause for concern.”
Shaktikanta Das, aged 67, was born in Odisha and has been serving as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India since December 2018. His tenure has exceeded the standard five-year term, sparking speculation about a potential extension that could make him the longest-serving RBI governor since the 1960s. He is currently in Chennai for personal reasons when the incident occurred.
Acidity, medically referred to as acid reflux, occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, often causing symptoms like heartburn, nausea, and bloating. Severe cases may require medical attention to prevent complications such as ulcers or persistent esophageal inflammation. Hospitalization is typically precautionary to monitor symptoms and rule out more serious issues.
The RBI has assured that Governor Das's condition is not serious and he is recovering well. Once discharged, he is expected to resume his regular schedule. No disruption to central bank operations has been reported, and his hospitalization has not impacted the RBI's ongoing activities.
